The biggest drawbacks about this platform are the low earnings, and complaints from members not getting paid by clients.

Amazon Mechanical Turk Explained

Amazon Mechanical Turk is a GPT program that appears to be a crowdsourcing platform for self-employed people. Clients advertise a range of different jobs that need useful human intervention.

The human input, to perform such tasks, is needed from the business’s customers and members. As mentioned earlier, the program is owned and operated by Amazon.com. The company launched it back in 2005 and it has remained popular ever since.

Exploring Amazon Mechanical Turk

Amazon Mechanical Turk specialises in Human Intelligence tasks (HITs). The tasks are similar to those that you would see on the majority of “Get Paid To” or Paid Survey programs.

The tasks are advertised by clients of Amazon Mechanical Turk who are referred to as Requesters. The people that perform the requested jobs (you and me) are referred to as Workers.

HITs differ in terms of the type of tasks involved and the rate of pay. Some HITs offer more money than others, even when the tasks are identical. It all depends on the client that you’re dealing with. One client might be offering $4 for a survey and another client might offer double the amount of money for the exact same task.

There are many different HITs always available through Amazon Mechanical Turk. That’s because the program has a good formula in place to find the best tasks from Requesters as well as retaining a large portfolio of Requesters.

Signing Up To MTurk

Getting started as a member is free. All you need to do is visit their site mturk.com. You will have to provide details such as your name, contact information and Social Security Number. Your request to sign up will take up to 3 days because the company has to validate your Social Security number.

Once your application is approved, you will be placed on a probationary period. During this time, you will need to do a minimum of 1 HIT per day for 10 days. Your maximum HITs per day is 100 and you are restricted from withdrawing funds during probation.

Once you’ve completed your 10 days, the restrictions are lifted.

Popular Tasks at Amazon Mechanical Turk

The types of tasks available at Amazon Mechanical Turk are plentiful. Below are some of the tasks you can do:

  • Video & audio transcribing
  • Categorizing jobs
  • Spreadsheet tasks in Excel
  • Rating YouTube videos

This should give you a rough idea of the type of work available but there’s lots more…

The tasks are provided by clients from various industries such as medicinal, wellness, financial and so on. Tasks are for virtually anything that involves the consumer market.

How Much Can You Earn Working for Mechanical Turk?

Some members have reported making a salary that ranges between $150 – $300 per week, which is quite decent for anyone looking to earn some extra cash in their spare time.

The only problem is that the earnings might not be consistent because tasks are paid at different rates, even if they are identical. You will not receive the same salary unless the tasks are from the same client.

Can You Earn More Money For Doing More Tasks?

The amount of money that you can make through MTurk depends on the amount of time you can commit to the doing tasks. Some Requesters will stipulate that their tasks are only available to Workers that have undertaken a specific amount of HITs.

A good example is a survey only open to Workers that have performed more than 150 HITs. Therefore, this job could potentially have a higher rate of pay and only offered to time-served users.

Amazon Mechanical Turk Earning Potential

At the beginning of your journey with MTurk you will start with lower earnings, even if some of the work pays well. On certain days, your earnings will be just a few dollars and on a lot of days you will earn even less.

This is the nature of GPT programs. Sorry to burst your bubble but the earnings will be quite low. Even if you work your way up to the higher tiers to access better-paying tasks, you’re still not guaranteed a good rate of earnings.

Is Amazon Mechanical Turk The Right Product For You?

Amazon Mechanical Turk might be worth it for those looking to make a few extra dollars here and there during their spare time. Beyond that, it will not provide the type of money required to replace your full-time job.

Amazon Mechanical Turk Exposed!

1). Minimum Earning Potential

The main issue with Amazon Mechanical Turk is that it just does not pay enough money for it to be a sustainable source of income. You’ll be competing with thousands of other members for the same jobs, therefore, availability will be a problem.

Some members that have worked for the company for many years have stated that the income used to be much better back in the day. In many cases, you will not find tasks because they’ve already been taken.

2). Some Clients Might Avoid Paying You!

Members have complained that certain clients don’t pay them for tasks that have been successfully done, with no reason given.

You could waste a considerable amount of your time doing work for a client that does not end up paying you. MTurk should have a procedure in place to stop Requesters from scamming Workers.

3). Payment Options Are Limited

At the moment, you can only be paid either by direct deposit or Amazon Gift Cards. It could take several days before you see your payment. It would be better if the company offered more payment options such as PayPal.

Advantages of Amazon Mechanical Turk?

1). No Payment Problems

An advantage of using Amazon Mechanical Turk is that your money is always available to withdraw whenever you want. The company does not impose minimum withdrawal amounts.

2). You Don’t Need To Be a Tech Expert

The tasks are not complicated and don’t require any specific background or experience. The stipulation is to have a specific number of HITs to access certain tasks. If tasks are available and you’re allowed to do them then you can go ahead.

Is Amazon Mechanical Turk a Scam or a Legit Business?

Amazon Mechanical Turk is a genuine GPT program that offers a variety of tasks and pays you to do them. However, if you’re after a full-time salary, this might not be the best platform.

  • The earnings are not guaranteed. On certain days you’ll make more money than others. GPT programs are not designed to provide a consistent salary.
  • Amazon Mechanical Turk’s screening system does not filter out unscrupulous clients that don’t pay members. This is an area of improvement needed for the program to effectively ban scammers.

Nonetheless, Amazon Mechanical Turk is still a decent income opportunity for anyone willing to spare a few hours per day to make a bit of side cash.
