If you’re considering using a mobile app to earn some extra money or even a full-time income then you’ve most likely come across Spare5 (or Spare 5). Nowadays, you can try your hand at micro-investment or GPT (get paid to) apps which are built to turn your phone into an income generator by completing small tasks.
Be careful though, some these apps make big claims but often fall short of their promises, however, if you find the right app you can make some decent side cash.
One such app is Spare5 and in this review I’ll be showing you whether there’s really any money to be made via this app.

If you trying to make money through GPT (Get Paid To) apps you are probably familiar with Spare5. The app can either be used via your web browser or the iOS app. At this moment in time Spare5 is not compatible with Android OS, sorry Google folks!
The profits are minimal and it’s debatable whether this hustle is even worth your time, however, the payment threshold is small and the company does not delay making payments to members. If you’re thinking of replacing your full-time job with this gig, don’t do that just yet.

Spare5 Explained
What is Spare5? It’s a mobile app made by a company named Mighty AI which utilizes data to check and teach computer models, therefore, assignments that are made for humans are the same ones that they want computers to mimic.
The assignments (or tasks) are sent to your phone or browser for you to complete. Most of them can be completed in less than a minute and as such, they are known as ‘micro-tasks’.
Spare5 can be accessed from many different countries other than the USA, however, those users might not have access to some of the tasks that are specific to certain areas or demographics.
Spare 5 has also validated its credibility by working with large brands like Microsoft, Amazon, Samsung and Expedia, proving that they are a genuine company.
Exploring Spare 5
Before you begin working with Spare5, you will need to download their app to your phone or use your web browser to login.
At this moment in time, Spare5 is not yet compatible with Android OS. The company has not given us any details about when they’ll be rolling out an Android app for Spare 5, if at all.
How Does Spare 5 Work?
To create an account all you need to do is sign up through the app or browser.
As soon as your account is activated, you’ll be prompted to fill out a welcome survey, you will also be paid for this and it contributes towards your profits. The survey is to determine the demographics that you’ll be focusing on, therefore, your tasks will be centred around the answers that you provide.
Once the survey is complete, you’ll be provided with a number of tasks to do. Similar to the welcome survey, the tasks will be rewarded with pay to bump up your profits. The tasks can be done in a few minutes and the pay is anything from $0.01 – $0.50.
Spare 5 Assignments
Spare5 works in much the same way as other GPT (Get Paid To) or paid survey platforms. The only difference is that the list of tasks available through Spare 5 are a bit more unique to other sites.
Spare5 gives you alternative tasks to do instead of the ones you’re used to doing with other paid survey sites. These tasks include:
- Captioning images
- Providing descriptions for TV and movie clips
- Centering and tracing
- Adding comments to images
- Listen to audio
And other different tasks…
Every now and again you’ll get to complete a few surveys as well, which take approximately 2 minute to finish. The tasks are designed to be completed in less than a minute.
The payment for each task differs depending how difficult it is to do. The average payment is between USD $0.20-$0.50. I’ve not seen a task that pays over $1, however, I’m not too sure if they actually exist.
If the tasks are abundant and are continuously done over an hour, then you’re going to make around $12 an hour at the most, which is better than some of the paid survey platforms that I’ve encountered.
Once your income has reached the minimum threshold of $1, payment is sent to you through PayPal every week on a Friday.
Spare 5 Referral Program
Additionally, you can take part in Spare5’s referral program which lets you profit from friends and family that you refer to the platform, However, it’s not very straight forward.
For starters, you can’t sign up to the referral scheme straight away after becoming a member. You need to be signed up to the platform for a fixed amount of time before it’s open to you. This is rule was most likely implemented to stop members from taking advantage of the program.
You will eventually get a referral link that you can distribute to your nearest and dearest. If your friends join through the link, you are rewarded with a bonus of $2 each time they make $10 and your friend will also be awarded $1. Not bad!
However, the referral scheme is time limited. You will only benefit from referral’s rewards for the first 180 days, or until they make $100. Therefore, you can earn a maximum of $20 from each referral.
Although this is a bit of a drawback, it’s still a decent way to bolster the earning potential.
Is Spare 5 Worth Signing Up To?
Spare5 is a decent side hustle whenever you’ve got a bit of extra time on your hands and want to make a bit of extra money, as the name suggests. I would not recommend trying to use this to replace your day job because the earning potential completely depends on the availability of tasks.

Spare 5 Exposed!
1). Minimal Earning Potential
The main question is, can Spare5 be used to earn a full-time income?
Definitely not. The amount of $12/ hour that I quoted earlier is the optimum rate that you can earn on the best day where all the conditions are conducive. That would mean, getting through a high number of available tasks consistently each hour. You would need to do this continuously for 8 hours everyday for a month to even come close to a full-time salary.
However, similar to other survey companies that I’ve looked at before, the tasks are wholly dependent on which part of the world you live and the demographics, therefore, you might or might not see many tasks. You would be fortunate to even find a couple of tasks to complete per day.
Most members have given up because of the low earnings. Below is an example of member feedback based on earnings:
The mini-tasks are supposed to be completed whenever you’ve got a spare moment and are not designed to be done in bulk over a prolonged time span which is why I can’t recommend this as a full-time work from home business.
2). Some Members Are Declined To Do Tasks
Spare5 has been criticized by its members who have been declined from doing a task partway through completing it. However, this is a very common practice that I’ve seen on other Get Paid To platforms.
Spare 5 needs specific demographics for a lot of the tasks it provides. In some cases, certain tasks won’t be visible to you if their not catered for your demographic. But in other cases, certain tasks are taken away from you at the last minute and do not count towards your profits even if you’ve made the effort to do them.
In the long run, this program will become frustrating because of the lack of available tasks. Some members have started off well and ended up giving up for this reason.

Unlike the other paid survey platforms that I’ve reviewed previously, Spare 5 pays its members regularly and promptly. The payment threshold is only $1 and is easily achievable provided that tasks are available for your demographic. Payment is made via PayPal every Friday.
Feedback regarding payment is encouraging and positive. Members receive payments on time and for the correct amounts.
Is Spare 5 a Scam or a Genuine Business?
Thankfully, Spare5 is a genuine company. However, the fact that they’ve partnered up with large familiar brands like Microsoft or Amazon, doesn’t mean that this is a lucrative opportunity for you to pursue.
- The most that you’ll make is a few dollars per hour if tasks are available. This doesn’t sum up to a full-time salary. Realistically, you might earn $1 per hour if you’re lucky.
- The main problem here is the regularity of tasks. Your earning potential is drastically lowered if the tasks are few and far between.
If you’re considering giving up your full-time job to make money with Spare 5, I’d urge you not to do this.
It’s only worth doing a few tasks per day when you’ve got a bit of time to spare like in your lunch break.
